The Ring - Opening Scene clip
Mise-on-scene for the opening mid shot shows a typical American stylistic kitchen giving you the wrong impression that everything is normalistic, but this is all about to change. The female character appears and as she progresses across the screen there is an incandescent blue light coming through the glass. Blue green light is often shown in the genre of science fiction films suggesting the unpercievable. It is also situated in the centre of the shot signifying its prestige of importance to the audience.( I like the idea of the blue lighting as it gives the film a whole new perrspective)
Artificially enhanced sound is used to constitute the cacophonous crackling of the TV in relative contrast to the main characters closeup highlighting her emotions. This gives the audience an indication that something catastrophic is about to occur. What is also enthralling is that the background is blurred increasing in the notability of the girl. The scene then transforms where the usage of slow tracking creates tension by gradually showing a bare room. The TV seems to be left on but it is the same sound that was shown in the kitchen indicating that a sound bridge has been used so even though the shot has changed the tension arises.
Outside it is dark and gloomy with the rain hitting the window pane . What is immense is how the audience is able to see through the windows which gives an impression of isolation. We are also given the impression that she is alone which is very common in the horror genre.
A long shot is introduced representing the perplexity of her body language. This is clearly symbolised by the shaking of the head and the frequency of her changing movement as she is unsure as to what is happening . After turning the TV off (her back to it) she retreats to the kitchen. The augmentation of sound is used again with the exaggeration of the rain beating down .This is effective as it makes the audience feel cold and empty which is what the producers intended for.
The fact her back is turned to the audience reflects her invulnerability in that particular scene which compares dramatically to her earlier vulnerability. Just as things are supposedly normalistic the sounds of the TV reoccur again creating tension and suspense. Using clever editing the audience and the character see a flicker on the screen which is intended to raise your pulse and raise your fear of the unknown.
Diegetic sound is used as the actress heavily breathes from the shock which i prosper is a reflection of the audiences emotions as well as the character. When considering the sound used, the majority of sound is actually the use of silence. This is because it emphasizes the sounds chosen by the director to create the right pervading atmosphere; tension.
The second major cliche would be the water across the floor which isoften used in horror moves when the female actress is washing. She then sees something in the mirror of the bath room or the water itself, and from under the door we see again the same alien blue light. Horror as a genre is like a puzzle if you look hard enough and can keep your head out of the pillow you will see links put in on purpose everywhere.
